
Prof Andrew Carr – HIV and Obesity
Professor Andrew Carr is a graduate of the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney and a member of both the RACP and the RCPA. He completed his MD thesis on HIV-related drug hypersensitivity in 1994, and has been at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, since 1989, where he is Head of the HIV, Immunology and Infectious Diseases Unit, and Head of the Clinical Research Program, Centre for Applied Medical Research. He was appointed Professor of Medicine, UNSW, in 2006. His main research interest is the complications of antiretroviral therapy, and is a member of advisory working groups on antiretroviral toxicity for the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research, UNSW and the International AIDS Society-USA. In 2008, he was cited by Science as one of the top 10 HIV researchers worldwide in the previous 10 years.
Dr David Carey – Effective Weight loss strategies
Dr Carey graduated in both Science and Medicine at the University of New South Wales, winning the University Medal in Medicine. Moving to Brisbane in 1996, Dr Carey took a post as senior lecturer and then acting director of the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology at Princess Alexandra Hospital, prior to his move to the Wesley Hospital and appointment as Associate Professor at UQ. In 2006, he established the Brisbane Metabolic Institute, specialising in the treatment and management of metabolic syndrome, diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis. Dr Carey has a strong interest in the research and development of medications and programs that promote weight loss and cure diabetes. He has been involved in clinical research and treatment of obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, PCOS and osteoporosis since 1990.
Dr Fabiola Martin – HTLV-1 Update
Dr Fabiola Martin obtained her undergraduate degree in Medicine at the University of Vienna and trained in Genitourinary and HIV Medicine in London. She completed her specialist clinical training and obtained her MD(Res) in Human T Leukaemia Virus Type 1 medicine at Imperial College London in 2009. She has been a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) since 2015. After moving to Australia, she was appointed as the Head of MD Program Admissions at the University of Queensland, and works as a sexual health and HIV physician in Brisbane. Fabiola is a Clinical Researcher but also a patient advocate, and supervises the www.HTLVaware.com webpage and conceived and lead the Open HTLV Letter to World Health Organisation to improve the implementation of HTLV-1 prevention strategies internationally.
